SPARC™ Keys

Matrix Management SPARC Keys for Success

Making Matrix Management 2.0™ Work

There are five keys to making the Matrix Management 2.0™ OS work, collectively called SPARC™: Structure, Productivity, Accountability, Relationship Management and Collaborative Leadership.

The Matrix Management 2.0™ Maturity Model is a tool that provides a roadmap for adopting the new Matrix Management 2.0 operating system by illustrating what level of maturity the organization is operating at for each key.

The Five SPARC™ Keys

Structure

In a matrix, the horizontal dimension is the most important, and it’s the horizontal dimension that needs to be structured. The Structure Key focuses on how to create a two-dimensional structure that is aligned with your business strategy, and how to decompose and deploy goals throughout the horizontal structure.

Productivity

The Productivity Key is critical to optimizing the whole organization instead of just optimizing individual parts such as functions. It addresses productivity, prioritization, resource management, standardization and technical management issues.

Accountability

Matrix accountability, the Accountability Key, is a completely different system of accountability than was used in the old OS:

  • It aligns everyone horizontally, around the external customer, rather than vertically, around functions.
  • It’s a proactive, rather than a reactive system.
  • It focuses on optimizing teams.
  • It promotes self-responsibility and self-direction.
  • It’s a no fault, no blame system.
  • It’s a commitment-based system.

Relationship Management

A matrix organization can be thought of as a web of relationships, most importantly, horizontal relationships. The Relationship Management Key addresses the types of relationships that exist in a matrix, and how to manage them effectively. It paves the way for a shift from authority-based relationships to partnership-based relationships.

Collaborative Leadership

In a matrix, cooperation is essential. Leaders must be able to gain buy-in and commitment in the absence of authority relationships and build high performing teams. The Collaborative Leadership Key addresses collaborative leadership skills needed by leaders to drive results.

How Do the Sparc Keys Generate Levers for Change?

Combining keys generates two levers for change. Accountability is pivotal and is included in both the Organizational Lever and the Leadership Lever

Organizational Lever

The first three keys – Structure, Productivity, and Accountability – combine to create the Organizational Lever. This lever addresses the organizational systems that need to be redesigned in order to support a matrix and shift the way that leadership teams function:

  • Governance
  • Strategy deployment
  • Business unit management
  • The project system
  • Cross-enterprise business process management

Leadership Lever

The last three keys – Accountability, Relationship Management and Collaborative Leadership – combine to create the Leadership Lever. This lever shifts leaders from authority-based, to commitment-based leadership, compelling them to:

  • Act as empowered adults
  • Build and manage relationships as partnerships
  • Lead without authority
  • Create a culture of success
